Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our Holiday Camp! Since 2006, we have been bringing kids to camp from all over Australia.

The camps are organised by Leadership Under the Stars Inc. which is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes children, adults and young people to get back outdoors and enjoy a life full of adventure. Therefore, all costs are kept as low as possible and any profits are put back into the organisation.

We have put over 14,000 children and young adults through our programs. There are many different reasons that kids come to camp:

  • Fun

  • Leadership

  • Responsibility

  • Socialisation

  • Respite for both parents and children

  • Break from technology

  • Build confidence and self esteem

  • To get outdoors

  • To learn new skills

  • To use their imagination

  • To increase their creativity

Our camp is based on some simple values:

At Leadership Under the Stars Inc. we are committed to the outdoors, individual personal achievement, justice and wholeness.

We create an environment for your children and young people to thrive with health and vitality.

The respect our leaders have for one another and the young people is great with tolerance, acceptance and care as the foundation of their respect.

All of our leaders have been with us, first as campers themselves and then as leaders and as future leaders of our community.

We embrace each individual’s qualities and characteristics and help them to develop those values through the outdoors. This includes both our campers and our leaders.

Leadership Under the Stars Inc., helps to provide some funds to children who can’t attend otherwise. Usually around 10% of our campers are sponsored. Some are foster kids, some have grandparents that raise their children's children. Some are parents from low socio-economic backgrounds. Some have disabilities and need a little extra help.

We welcome parents to give us feedback and we ask the children and young people throughout the camp to gauge their experiences and how we can improve. It takes such a wide scope of individuals to makeup our society. If each individual can give back just a few of these qualities, then what a bright future we have for our country.

Some important points about camp:

Bedding Allocations

Parents, please note that you MUST advise us if your young person or young people have a night time condition that may require urgent attention and may require your young person to be in the same cabin or tents as one of our leaders. If your young person is, for e.g. asthmatic or has night terrors etc. and you give your permission, we can have your young person sleep in the same cabin as a leader. The leader will be female and hold all of the necessary qualifications to supervise your young person or young people. PLEASE ADVISE US IMMEDIATELY.

  • There is now a CANTEEN that young people will have access to throughout their stay. Our senior leader, will hold money for the campers at registration. Most items are cost price eg chocolate bars are $2 and so on.

  • Please make sure all students bring their own:  WATER BOTTLE, HAT & SUNSCREEN.

  • Young people are responsible for applying sunscreen themselves. We will remind and check they have sunscreen on. We also have sunscreen stations located throughout the venue. IF YOUR YOUNG PERSON CANNOT APPLY THEIR OWN SUNSCREEN, DO NOT SEND THEM TO CAMP WITHOUT SPECIAL PERMISSION. We will not be help accountable for sunburn. This is QLD. Its hot and sunny.

LOST PROPERTY:

WE KEEP LOST PROPERTY AND PUT IT OUT ON THE DAY OF DEPARTURE.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND EXPENSIVE CLOTHING OR ITEMS TO CAMP.

Children misplace things all the time. They are busy and excited. It is best that you give them older clothes or clothes you don’t mind them maybe losing.

We are not responsible for the loss of items at camp. Any lost property not collected on departure is donated to our charity collection for future camps.

On departure, check your child’s luggage and bags to ensure they have everything. Please understand we have up to 80 children during camp and trying to keep track of lost shoes or socks or other items is near impossible for our team members.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations to any kids camp bookings will not

be refunded or altered in any way. If outside forces lead to camp being postponed, your payment for camp will also be postponed to the following camp.

If you have any further questions please call our office on 0413 631 046

Complaints:

We will happily handle complaints that are of a constructive nature. Please be aware that

should you complain, you will be rostered to volunteer at our next camp. :-)

This is a camp program designed to create Community Spirit, Survival, Responsibility,

Individual and Team Success, Respect, Determination and Motivation

Things to tell your young person before camp:

Hygiene - Please ask your child/young person to take showers, clean their teeth and use personal hygiene items such as roll on deodorant (if needed) and female sanitary products during camp. Please ask your child/young person to ensure that they dispose of items in the correct way. All children / young people attending camp should be able to shower without assistance. NO SPRAYS ARE ALLOWED.

Lollies - Please ask your child to not sneak lollies into their cabins or sleeping areas. This attracts vermin and can be be messy and sticky. :-(

Emotions - Children and young people can experience a range of emotions during camp. Please ask your child to let a leader know if they are feeling sad, homesick, unwell etc. We can only help what we know about. :-)

Gossip - Sometimes kids can over exaggerate things when reporting an incident to us  or to you. This can often be a result of gossip. One person heard someone say something to someone and they tell someone else and so on. For e.g:

"My horse fainted", a child told her parent on the way home from camp. The horse didn't faint. It tripped over a small log. It didn't even fall down.

"One of the leaders set himself on fire!" One of our leaders does fire breathing and performed for the kids and young people.

Please feel free to call us or text or email for clarification on anything camp related. We

are more than happy to talk with you.

Tantrums / Meltdowns - we have in the past had children who have had meltdowns due to ASD and  PTSD  etc.  These can also  be the  result  of  excitement  and  overwhelm for some kids coming to camp. I have heard these  instances called  "raging". These are not rages. Please let me know if your child is prone to these so that we can use strategies to help in the best possible way.

Behaviour at Camp

All young people are expected to adhere to the rules which are: School rules apply - Please tell your young person that school rules apply.

  • No running

  • No swearing or foul language including jokes and references to drugs or alcohol.

  • Keeping personal space (no physical interaction with other people, students or leaders)

  • Young people are not allowed to leave camp unless under the supervision of a leader or parent or guardian.

  • Bullying is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Any bullying will be addressed immediately, and the young people will be disciplined immediately. This could and probably will result in being sent home.

  • Violence will not be tolerated. Lying, stealing and abuse, whether physical or verbal will not be tolerated.

  • Appropriate clothing must be worn at all times. No midriffs, no singlets, no

short shorts, no high heels.

  • No technology

Fighting will not be tolerated. We understand that in certain situations, young people and children become frustrated. However, if your child engages in a fight of any sort, you will be called and he or she may be sent home. You will not receive a refund. Fighting is unacceptable. Harming another person is unacceptable.

Your young person / student MUST report any incidents that occur. We CANNOT help if we don’t know about the incident.

Some kids swear. We are not scouts. We are not a school. We have children from all walks of life come to camp. Some of them we meet for the first time on the first day of camp. Young people have also bought vapes to camp. All of these situations are handled.

Young people also suffer withdrawal from technology. This is a REAL thing. It may cause them to be teary or have anxiety. Again, we handle this.

If you think your child is not capable of handling these situations and reporting them, then please do not send your child to camp.

Depending on the severity of the issue, a first warning is issued. Discipline will include ‘time out’ and increasing responsibilities such as dish duty, cleaning and yard duty such as picking up litter.

If a second warning is issued, the parent or carer is called and appropriate action is discussed.

At  Leadership  Under the   Stars   Inc   we   use a   time   out system,   similar to some schools. If a child receives a 2nd warning, you will be called and they are sent home.  No  refunds  are  issued  for  bad  behaviour.  Please  ensure  your  child understands the rules of camp before arrival. This is to keep all campers     safe and having fun.

If your child gets sick:

We will call you as soon as we are made aware that your child is sick or has been sick or is not feeling well. Most illnesses will come from other children on camp. Therefore please DO NOT send your child on camp if they have been sick within the last 24 hours before arriving. Camp is not like school. As much as we try our very best for the children to use strict hygiene, they are eating together, sleeping in the same quarters, using the bathroom and showers, 24 hours per day for up to 5 days.

We follow very strict guidelines for food safety and workplace health and safety.
